The Role of CAD in Pattern Grading

Understanding Pattern Grading: Can Pattern Grading be Automated?

As a freelance pattern maker, understanding the ins and outs of pattern grading is essential to expanding your services and enhancing your skillset. Whether you're new to the industry or a seasoned professional, this guide will delve into the intricacies of pattern grading, its potential for automation, and how tools like CLO3D, Optitex, and Lectra fit into the equation.

What is Pattern Grading?

Pattern grading is a crucial process in apparel development, enabling brands to offer garments in a variety of sizes. But what does it really mean? At its core, pattern grading involves taking a base pattern (often referred to as the first sample size and often time times the size in the middle of the size range) and adjusting it to create additional sizes. This process ensures that a garment maintains its intended fit and style across different body types.

My Journey with Pattern Grading

In my early career, I had the opportunity to work specifically in the role of a pattern grader, as well as a pattern maker's assistant. This dual experience gave me a unique perspective on how patterns evolve from the initial design to the final product available in multiple sizes. Working in-house for a US based company, I was heavily involved in using Optitex, a powerful pattern-making software, to test samples in 3D. Before any fabric was cut, I could visualize how the garment would fit across different sizes. This not only streamlined the process but also highlighted the subtle differences between digital and physical samples.

One of the most rewarding aspects of this work was seeing how the 3D samples compared to real-life fit testing. It's one thing to see a digital representation, but watching a garment come to life and fit perfectly across a size range was SO satisfying. This experience reinforced the importance of precision and expertise in pattern grading—it's not just about resizing a pattern but ensuring that the garment's fit is maintained throughout.

Can Pattern Grading Be Automated?

With the rapid advancements in technology, the question of automation in pattern grading is inevitable. However, the short answer is: not yet.

The Role of Technology in Pattern Grading

While pattern-making software has advanced at an exponential rate, offering tools that assist in the grading process, the need for a knowledgeable, skilled pattern grader remains. While these tools do help speed up the process, they don't replace the expertise required to ensure that the graded patterns maintain the design's original intent. For example, pattern-making software can auto-fit patterns to different size avatars, which is INSANELY useful for gaining insight into what the upsized pattern may look like on another size. However, this is not the same as grading a pattern and doesn't result in a graded pattern file. The human touch is still essential in making judgment calls that software simply can't anticipate.

My Experience with CLO3D, and Optitex

As someone who has worked with both CLO3D and Optitex extensively, I can confidently say that these tools are invaluable for freelance pattern makers. My journey with Optitex began when I was working full-time for a mid-sized brand. The software's capabilities allowed us to streamline our grading process, making it easier to produce consistent and accurate sizes across our entire product line.

Transition to CLO3D

I later transitioned to using CLO3D, primarily because of its accessibility to freelancers and the exceptional tech support I experienced first hand. CLO3D's user-friendly interface and EXTREMELY robust features made it a go-to tool for my freelance projects. Over time, I became confident enough with CLO3D that I began getting many requests for tutorials and so I began teaching a course on it, helping other designers and pattern makers harness its power.

Can You Automate Pattern Grading Using CAD?

Despite the advanced features these tools offer, automating pattern grading is still not possible. The process requires manual inputs of data, which must be meticulously developed first. Typically, this involves starting with developing a size chart that reflects the intended market's body measurements. From there, grade rules are created, which dictate how much a pattern should increase or decrease between sizes. These grade rules are then applied to specific points on the pattern using the CAD software.

Why Manual Input is Key

While it might sound labor-intensive, this manual input is crucial for maintaining the integrity of the design across all sizes. Automated systems can assist but can't replace the nuanced decisions that a skilled pattern grader makes. The process involves understanding the design, the fabric's behavior, and the target customer's body shape—all factors that require a human touch.

In Conclusion: The Art and Science of Pattern Grading

Pattern grading is both an art and a science. It's a process that demands precision, expertise, and a deep understanding of garment construction. While technology has provided us with incredible tools to aid in this process, the role of the skilled pattern grader remains irreplaceable. As a freelance pattern maker, mastering pattern grading will not only enhance your offerings but also set you apart in a competitive industry.
