What is a tech pack?

Tech pack, short for technical package, is a comprehensive document that serves as the blueprint for manufacturing a garment. It is essential for communicating the specifications a manufacturer needs to create a product accurately.

Why do you need a tech pack?

  • Consistency: It ensures accuracy so the garment is constructed consistently every time.

  • Clarity: Provides clear instructions to the manufacturer so everyone is on the same page.

  • Efficiency: Helps avoid misunderstandings and mistakes which can be time-consuming.

What is typically included in a tech pack?

  1. Cover Page: Includes the style number, name, and a brief description of the garment.

  2. Technical Sketches: Detailed front and back views of the garment, sometimes including side and interior views. These are often drawn in flat form to clearly show all design elements.

  3. Measurements & Size Specs: A detailed table outlining the measurements for each size the garment will be produced in. This includes measurements for the chest, waist, hips, length, sleeve length, and any other relevant dimensions.

  4. Bill of Materials (BOM): Lists all the materials required to produce the garment, including fabrics, trims, labels, and other components. This section specifies the type, color, and supplier information for each material.

  5. Construction Details: Instructions on how the garment should be constructed. This includes stitching types, seam allowances, and specific techniques to be used.

  6. Artwork & Placement: Details of any prints, embroideries, or appliqués, including their placement, size, and colors.

  7. Labels & Tags: Information about the labels and tags that need to be attached to the garment, including their placement and specifications.

  8. Packaging Instructions: Guidelines on how the garment should be packed, folded, and any special packaging requirements.

How to use a tech pack?

  • Once you have a tech pack, you can use it to contact multiple factories and request quotes for production.

  • Maintain a record of all changes made to the product.

  • Review physical prototype samples against the specifications for quality control.

Tips for Creating an Effective Tech Pack

  1. Be Detailed: Include as much detail as possible. Ambiguities can lead to mistakes.

  2. Use Clear Visuals: High-quality sketches and diagrams make instructions easier to follow.

  3. Stay Organized: A well-structured tech pack is easier to navigate and use.

  4. Update Regularly: Make sure to update the tech pack with any changes in design or specifications.

If you need to reorder a successful product or make modifications in the future, a tech pack serves as a comprehensive record. It ensures that any changes or reorders are consistent with the original specifications, maintaining the integrity of your design across different production runs.
